£2000 bursary awarded to student app development team

The first of four £2,000 prizes has been awarded to a postgraduate student as part of this year's University of Sussex Santander Junior Associate Entrepreneurship Bursary scheme.

Tim Lingard (MPhys Theoretical Physics) intends to launch a free app development course for students to improve their programming skills and build a portfolio of projects. The business would generate revenue by providing a cost-effective resource for entrepreneurs looking for a way to design and test their app ideas.

"It's brilliant to find out that the Innovation Centre wants to support my idea," said Tim. "I can't wait to start working with them and create a new platform to help other entrepreneurs realise their own ideas!"

Tim's application was judged to have highlighted a pressing need among the entrepreneurial community, as well as an opportunity for students and graduates of the University to improve their employability and prospects.

"The purpose of this award is to offer students at Sussex the chance to develop their ideas and realise an entrepreneurial experience," said Paul Jordan, who manages student enterprise on behalf of the Sussex Innovation Centre. "There were several strong contenders among the applications in December, many of which have already made significant progress. We felt that this project in particular was the one that we would be able to add the most value to, particularly with regard to providing customer insight."

"One of the key messages that we try to impart, not just to entrepreneurial students, but to all of the start-up businesses we work with, is the importance of thoroughly researching and understanding your customers' needs, then using that insight to develop your proposition."

Four prizes of £2,000 each will be awarded across the academic year as part of the StartUp Sussex Enterprise Programme, a joint initiative delivered by the Sussex Innovation Centre and University of Sussex Careers and Employability Centre.
