A recently-released independent list of the UK’s most exciting technology start-ups features 5 different Sussex Innovation members.

Emteq and Race Nation were named among Business Cloud’s “101 Tech Start-Up Disrupters to Watch” last month, while Filmstro, Return2Play and TRIM-IT were named “Rising Stars”.

Both lists celebrate UK companies founded in the past 5 years who are “using tech to shake up traditional industries”.

Emteq

Emteq is working on combining wearable sensors with VR headsets to create technology that can recognise human emotions and replicate expressions in a VR environment. One of the many potential applications for this groundbreaking technology involves the rehabilitation of patients with facial paralysis. The company is growing rapidly as it builds towards the full commercial release of its first products in 2018.

Race Nation

Race Nation helps mass participation sports events such as marathons, bike rides and triathlons to raise more money for charity. Combining their white label online registration platform with fundraising pages for entrants has been shown to have a dramatic impact on donations. Originally founded in Jersey, Race Nation opened its mainland base of operations at Sussex Innovation Centre in 2015. The company recently raised £1million in private investment as it prepares to accelerate its growth internationally.

Filmstro

Filmstro’s dynamic music software enables video content producers to soundtrack their work with an adaptable score. In the past few years the company has signed a licensing deal with the BBC, become an official Vimeo partner, and released a plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro CC. It recently received private investment of £500,000 from directors of the global creative network iris.

Return2Play

One of the first members to join Sussex Innovation Croydon when the hub opened in 2015, Return2Play has developed a concussion management system for grassroots sports. Partnered with a network of doctors, the platform helps clubs and players to comply with safety guidelines and get back onto the field with efficient, professional care. Return2Play has been adopted in a number of schools across the UK.

TRIM-IT

Barbers’ marketplace app TRIM-IT has grown from strength to strength since winning the 2016 StartUp Sussex student enterprise competition. Its digital queuing system is now used in more than 320 barbers across Brighton and London, and the product won the 2017 edition of the national Big Idea Challenge.
